AED Training

Pads attached

With new AED devices the correct positioning of the pads on the casualty's chest wall is detailed by the aid of drawings on the pads relative to the correct position on the chest wall

Chest compressions

Once attached to the casualty, the AED will issue prompts such as: when to shock or continue with CPR.

Rescue breaths

In order to maintain blood oxygen levels during defib it is important to continue with CPR until the AED tells you to keep clear.

Deliver shock

When the shock deliver button is pressed, modern AED machines make it impossible to deliver a shock to a casualty with a normal heart rhythm.

Bandaging

Support sling and head bandage

The head bandage, is perhaps one of the most difficult to apply correctly. The support sling is mainly used to support a sprain or fracture.

Elevation sling

Often confused with the support sling. The elevation sling can be used to support a dislocation or fracture of the collar bone, and also used to reduce the blood flow of a bleeding hand wound.

Hand bandage horizontal wound

This type of hand bandage has the added benefit of utilizing the patients own hand, to apply pressure to a horizontal wound to the palm of the hand, in order to control bleeding.

Hand bandage vertical wound

Whilst a vertical wound should be dressed in this way, to ensure blood loss is controlled by the dressing. Note the elevated position to reduce blood flow. An elevation sling could also be applied.

Recovery Position

Check responses

On finding a casualty, after ensuring the area is safe it's important to ascertain if the casualty is unconscious.

Recovery position

Placing an unconscious breathing casualty in the recovery position will help maintain an open clear airway and allow for free drainage of body fluids from the mouth.

Open airway and monitor

Monitor the casualty at all times until professional help arrives, maintain an open clear airway, and continually monitor breathing.

CPR

The three main steps to delivering effective CPR: Ascertain breathing is absent, correct timing and depth of chest compressions, and effective rescue breaths.

Check breathing

Look, listen and feel for signs the casualty is breathing.

Chest compressions

If the casualty is not breathing, chest compressions should be commenced immediately.

Rescue breaths

Followed by two successful rescue breaths. Using the head tilt chin lift method ensure's an open airway.
